Syllabus for the week of September 29, 2008

FOCUS: Community and Limiting Factors

WOD: a comprehensive list of vocabulary words that will be used, studied, and quizzed the entire year. WOD will be listed in BOLD. Write the date, word, and definition in your planner each day.

SCIENCE PAPER: Write a brief summary of the article (analyze), Connect and Apply the ideas from the article to a topic in class/experience (synthesize), and Express your
personal opinion on the article (criticize). Each section should have three details each. Each paper will be worth 10 point.

Monday: (COMMUNITY) What is diversity? How does diversity affect populations? What games do we play where diversity leads to loss/gain and have a survival theme?
HW: Community worksheet.

Tuesday: (FACTORS) Introduce Limiting Factor/Resource Game. Play a few rounds and collect data on populations for later use. Use the data from each round of deer population to create a graph of the population change of deer.
HW: Make a graph from the data from the limiting factor/resource game.

Wednesday: (RESOURCES) Review graphs and make changes. Introduce the major characteristics of a graph (independent, dependent, axis, quadrants, +-, etc)
HW: Final copy of your Limiting Factors/Resources

Thursday: (FOOD CHAIN) Food chains. Create food chains using organism playing cards. Review organism topics.
HW: Food Web worksheet

Friday: (FOOD WEB) Review Food Web worksheet. Why is the sun so important to you? Break into groups and create a food chain that connects you item to the sun.
HW: RESEARCH: Choose an international city, find current population, local/typical meal including appetizer and dessert, current event involving science. Remember that any topic can be connected to ecology if you try hard. Current event should be printed or cut out please. Due Monday!!!

Monday: (POPULATION) STUDY SESSION AT LUNCH FOR TOMORROW'S TEST. Bring your notes and notebook.
Learn the new login and passwords. Learn Power Point Presentations. Begin creating the slides for each of the following section of the trimester - Organism, Population, Community, Ecosystem, & Biosphere. Review worksheets and notes on Organisms. HW: Study notes, worksheets, and WOD words for Quizzes tomorrow.

Tuesday: (FACTORS)
Organism (Producer & Consumer) Organism Quiz & WOD Quiz after. All words up to last Friday will be on this test.
HW: Community worksheet.

Wednesday: (CAPACITY)
Correct Community worksheet. What are populations and how are they different from organisms? What determines a population?
HW: No homework.

Thursday: (EQUILIBRIUM)
Identify one autotroph and one heterotroph in a similar habitat. Focus on the autotroph and gather information on autotrophs shape, size, life cycle, and any other interesting facts. Place this information on your slide and include a least one image of your autotroph.
HW: Limiting Factor worksheet.

Friday: (DIVERSITY)
Correct Limiting Factor worksheet. Focus today on your heterotroph and gather information on the heterotrophs shape, size, strengths/weaknesses, food intake, and and any other interesting facts. Place this information on another slide and include at least one image of your heterotroph. HW: No homework.
