FOCUS: POPULATION/COMMUNITY TEST & cont. Ecosystem

WOD: a comprehensive list of vocabulary words that will be used, studied, and quizzed the entire year. WOD will be listed in BOLD. Write the date, word, and definition in your planner each day.

Monday: (MORTALITY) Discuss vacations & pictures from your vacations and label them on a class map where each type of biome is located in the world. Keep pictures to add to your slide later next week. Begin Study Guide with a partner.
HW: Complete Study Guide.

Tuesday: (LONGEVITY) STUDY SESSION FOR TEST AT LUNCH FOR PERIODS 3 & 4!!!
Review study guide.
HW: Study population & community study guide.

Wednesday: (COMMUNITY) STUDY SESSION FOR TEST AT LUNCH FOR PERIODS 7, 8, & 9!!!
POPULATION & COMMUNITY TEST.
HW: No homework.

Thursday: (SUCCESSION) Ecological Succesion. Have forest plants and animals always existed? What characteristics determine a biome?
HW: Ecological Succession wks.

Friday: (BIOME) Read Chapter 2 in the Environmental Science textbook and complete the Chapter Review Questions 1-20 in class.
HW: Use a blank map of the world to create a biome map identifying each of the biome in the textbook. [HARDER- Use a single continent map and create a similar map identifying each biome and major cities]

Reminders:
* GREEN IDEA (from students): Bring in any outside house plants inside if you still can.
* PARENT/GUARDIAN(S): We still need four parents for emergency caller. Please email.
* MR. APOSTOL’S ADV.: Breakfast Thursday. Please arrive at 8:00 am and bring a healthy snack to class.

FOCUS: RETAKE WEDNESDAY and Introduction to Ecosystem.

WOD: a comprehensive list of vocabulary words that will be used, studied, and quizzed the entire year. WOD will be listed in BOLD. Write the date, word, and definition in your planner each day.

PREDATOR/PREY GAME: ALL school rules will always apply. Game ends 10/22/08
Rule 1: No playing in the school building.
Rule 2: No playing in gym or the bus.
Rule 3: Tell Mr. Apostol the following morning who is out.
Rule 4: Anyone wearing 50% red on their shirt (Tuesday) is camouflaged from predators.
Rule 5: Anyone who is wearing gym shoes (Monday) is extremely fast and cannot be tagged.
Rule 6:

Monday: (HABITAT) MEDIA CENTER Work on fixing your organism and population slides. If you already completed these two then continue onto community and food webs.
HW: No homework unless you need to come to the media center in the morning.

Tuesday: (NICHE) What is Habitat and Niche? What is an Ecosystem (biome)? Begin worksheet.
HW: Finish Ecosystem worksheet from class.

Wednesday: (ECOSYSTEM) RETAKE WEDNESDAY AT LUNCH FOR WOD #1
What is biogeochemical? The Nitrogen Cycle, Carbon Cycle, and Water Cycle. HW: Biogeochemical worksheet

Thursday: (BIOME) HALF DAY - CONFERENCE DAY
What makes a biome different then the others?
HW: No homework.

Friday: (BIOTIC/ABIOTIC) HALF DAY
What makes a biome different then the others?
HW: Bring a photo of you in some international or domestic city. Label with a heading, city, and biome it represents. Due Monday, 10/27/08. This photo may possibly not be returned.

Wednesday: () Go through the Power Point slide outline. Use this time to review your notes and worksheets to create a two or three slides. Tomorrow we will be using computers to place them in your power point. Review WOD list as a class.
HW: Complete at least one Power Point slide outline.

Thursday: () STUDY SESSION AT LUNCH!
MEDIA CENTER (computers) Place your hard copy template of your slide into your Power Point.
HW: Study your WOD list.

FOCUS: Community (continued): Food/Energy Pyramid, Organism interactions & Game Predator/Prey.

WOD: a comprehensive list of vocabulary words that will be used, studied, and quizzed the entire year. WOD will be listed in BOLD. Write the date, word, and definition in your planner each day.

SCIENCE PAPER: Write a brief summary of the article (analyze), Connect and Apply the ideas from the article to a topic in class/experience (synthesize), and Express your
personal opinion on the article (criticize). Each section should have three details each. Each paper will be worth 10 point.

Monday: () Review student international city, current population, local/typical meal including appetizer and dessert, current event involving science. Organism interactions: Food Pyramid (change in # of organisms and energy change in energy)
HW: Place the following terms in a large pyramid (include pictures): HERBIVORE, OMNIVORE, CARNIVORE, DETRIVORE, PRIMARY PRODUCER, PRIMARY CONSUMER, SECONDARY CONSUMER, TERTIARY CONSUMER, QUATERNARY CONSUMER, ALGAE, MOSQUITO, DRAGONFLY, PERCH, PIKE, BEAR, MOST ENERGY, LEAST ENERGY, LARGEST POPULATION, SMALLEST POPULATION.

Tuesday: ()Symbiosis & Coevolution- What is Commensalism, Parasitism, and Mutualism? How is Coevolution related?
HW: No homework.

Wednesday: () Competition & Predator and Prey- What types of competition are there? What adaptations and features distinguish a predator or a prey?
HW: In your notebook (or tape a sheet inside) draw a detailed a picture of a example of predator and prey. Label the common names of the organisms and two characteristics or behaviors which which allows each of them to survive.

Thursday: () Blue Planet video: Great Plaines, Jungles, and the Sea. Notice what organisms belong to each of the following locations. List any interactions between these organisms.
HW: NO homework.
Friday: () Spore: Game of developing organism populations and communities.
