Syllabus 12/1/08

Syllabus for the week of DECEMBER 1, 2008

FOCUS: Alternative Resources & Media Center Monday, Wednesday, & Friday.

WOD: a comprehensive list of vocabulary words that will be used, studied, and quizzed the entire year. WOD will be listed in BOLD. Write the date, word, and definition in your planner each day.

ECOLOGY PPP: Organism, Population, Community, Ecosystem, & Biosphere information should be included. Take time this week to make sure that review your past material and be sure that there is a theme with the rest of your slide. Remember that your personality should be reflected in your work. Due Wednesday, December 10, 2008.

REUSE PROJECT: A black leather belt will be sent home with each child. Please spend time with him/her to find an alternative use for the belt to teach them the idea of REUSE. Other material may be added or the belt may serve as an additional part to another object. Whether it is the primary or secondary component include all the details and materials needed to complete this product. Due Monday, December 8, 2008.


Monday: (QUALITATIVE) Report to the Media Center. Work on slides related to the following topics: Pollution, Resources (Non-Renewable & Renewable), Alternative Resources, & 3 R's.
HW: Scientific Process WS. Explain or give an example for each section.

Tuesday: (QUANTITATIVE) Discuss the Scientific Process & Lab Reports. How do you create a lab report (experiment)? What does each section mean? What is the purpose of Science? Giant Greens Project. What does the class think causes a plant to grow? List the variables (factors) and choose which one to experiment on tomorrow. Write down what you believe will happen if you adjust one of them (Hypothesis).
HW: #1) Write a story about what the future will look like in 10, 20, 50, or 100 years. Include all aspects of life and include WHY these things have occured. Due tomorrow. #2)List as many variables that could change the growth of the plant. Due Thursday 12/4/08.

Wednesday: (INDEPENDENT/DEPENDENT) Report to the Media Center. Work on a slide BIOSPERE slide on "What Will the Future Look Like?". This slide should include a story detailing what you see the future looking like AND what caused it to become this way. PPP is due next week Wednesday, December 10, 2008.
HW: (look at #2 homework from Tuesday)

Thursday: (VARIABLE) Plant your tomato plant. What are factors, variables, & constants? How do they relate to our experiment and our hypotheis. Create an "If, then..." statement about the plant growth. Begin creating a template of a table that can be used to gather your data on the plant growth. Choose the variable that will be used and whether your data is qualitative or quantitative.

HW: Create the table (electronic if you can) from class to monitor the progress of your plant growth until our last day before winter break. HARDER: Create two tables, one with quantitative observations and another with qualitative observations.

Friday: (CONSTANT) Report to the Media Center. Final Class period to work on your PPP on Ecology.

Monday: (ALTERNATIVE)
Make a table of each of the alternative resources. Fill in definitions and pros & cons for each of the alternative resources.
HW: Draw a picture of a future home with five major factors that your home would have in order to conserve resources. Include an explanation of each of the five features and how they will work.

Tuesday: (CONSERVATIVE)
Why are you thankful for science? Write a brief poem, story, comic strip of why you appreciate some science.
HW: No homework.

Wednesday: () No school - Happy Institute Day!!!
HW: Enjoy your day off.

Thursday: () No school - Happy Thanksgiving!!!
HW: Eat & enjoy your dinner today with your family.

Monday: (GEO-/HYDRO-/HELIO-)
WOD #2 TEST!!!
HW: No homework.

Tuesday: (THERMAL/POWER)
How does nonrenewable energy relate to pollution? What determines a pollution? What types of pollution are there? Being with Soil & Other pollutions. In class worksheet should be completed.
HW: Air & Water pollution worksheet (two sheets)

Wednesday: (TIDAL/WAVE)
Reveiew Air & Water pollution worksheets. What are Renewable resources? What types are there? Where are have you seen any of these renewable resources?
HW: No homework.

Thursday: (BIOMASS/BIOFUEL)
What is a Microecosystem? Build your own microecosystem out of a two liter bottle, substratum, and some seeds.
HW: Renewable Energy worksheet.

Friday: (TURBINE/GENERATOR) Report to Media Center immediately
Review answers to Renewable Energy worksheet. Use the time in the media center to create a slide on Ecosystem. For example large scale polution and story, nonrenewable & renewable, or alternative resources.
HW: No homework.

Review Monday's worksheet. Continue notes on fossil fuels and energy? What is energy? How are fossil fuels turned into energy?

Syllabus for the week of November 3, 2008

FOCUS: Ecosystems continued & computers on Thursday, November 6th. Test should be coming home Tuesday. RETAKE WEDNESDAY FOR POPULATION/COMMUNITY TEST!!!

WOD: a comprehensive list of vocabulary words that will be used, studied, and quizzed the entire year. WOD will be listed in BOLD. Write the date, word, and definition in your planner each day.

Monday: (CLIMATE) Review Biome worksheet. Submit your biome map. Begin research of your selected biome using the resources in class and personal experiences.
HW: Research the 10 characteristics of one biome that you have selected from class. Water biomes, wetlands, and alpine tundra may be harder to research if you like a challenge.

Tuesday: (THERMOMETER) Break into groups based on your biome and complete the list of characteristics on butcher paper. Rotate around the room and complete the other nine plus biome information.
HW: Rewrite your handwritten table or enter the information from class on biomes in to your electronic table. Homework Due Thursday, November 6, 2008.

Wednesday: (HYGROMETER) Natural Disasters and Disease. How do major events affect biomes? What major events drastically changed cities/villages/regions in the world? Create a list and choose one to research more on.
HW: Continue to work on your table of the biomes. Find more information on your selected major disaster or event that affect some region of the world. Domestic events are okay, but you can challenge yourself with an international one. Due Friday, November 7, 2008.

Thursday: (BAROMETER) Media Center. Create an additional slide on Ecosystems. Try to include the photo of yourself on vacation in one of the slides. Remember to be informative and include your personality.
HW: Contiune the research of the major disaster.

Friday: (ALTIMETER) Share and discuss the disasters of each biome. What effect did it have on the area?
HW: No homework.
